NISSAN SELLS MILLIONTH MAXIMA SEDAN -- SALES MOMENTUM AND IMAGE CONTINUE STRONG

CARSON, Calif., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The popular Nissan Maxima, the best-selling import sedan in its class for the past seven years, reached another milestone recently with the sale of the one millionth Maxima in the United States market. The millionth sale was among the 10,193 Maximas sold in June, Nissan's best total sedan sales month ever.
"The Maxima, our flagship sedan, has been a tremendous hit with consumers since its introduction," said Earl J. Hesterberg, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "Now in its third generation, its momentum as a sales and image leader just keeps growing."
According to Hesterberg, the Maxima created an entirely new class of "upper-middle" Japanese sedans in the U.S. market, combining a mid-sized exterior and roomy interior with a previously unavailable level of performance and luxury features.
Along with creating the segment, the Maxima was the first upper- middle import sedan to sell more than 100,000 units per year, doing so for the first time in 1986. It is currently the best-selling import model with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of more than $20,000. Calendar-year sales through June 1993 are approximately 50,000 units, a 22 percent increase vs. the same period last year.
The first generation Maxima, introduced in 1980 as a 1981 model, featured a 240Z-based six-cylinder engine. It was replaced in 1985 with an all-new second generation design. This model introduced front-wheel drive, Nissan's benchmark V6 engine and a driver-adjustable suspension.
The current Maxima, the first Nissan vehicle designed specifically for the U.S. market, debuted in 1989 -- becoming the first car ever to win the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey (IQS) in its introductory year.
The newest Maxima has won numerous other awards and accolades since its introduction, including being named to Car and Driver's 1989 "10 Best" list and Automobile's 1990 "All-Stars." The Maxima was also honored as Automobile's "Best $20,000 Sedan" in 1989.
Over the years, the Maxima has established an outstanding record for quality and durability. Home Mechanix magazine named it "Easy Servicing Car of the Year" in 1989, and in 1991 Import Auto Parts & Accessories magazine named the Maxima "One of the Ten Most Reliable Vehicles."
The 1993 Maxima is available in two trim levels, the sport-oriented SE and the luxurious GXE -- each offering a high level of standard appointments.
The GXE features a 160-horsepower 3.0-liter SOHC V6 and electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. M 190-horsepower 3.0-liter DOHC V6 and sport-tuned four-wheel independent suspension. Both versions offer a standard driver's side air bag and non-CFC air conditioning.
"We're extremely proud of the Maxima's long-running success," said Hesterberg. "Now it's on to the next million sales."
