NISSAN SELECTS U.S. COMPANY FOR $4 MILLION MACHINE TOOL DEAL

NISSAN SELECTS U.S. COMPANY FOR $4 MILLION MACHINE TOOL DEAL
DETROIT, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan announced today that it will buy more than $4 million worth of machine tools from Illinois-based Ingersoll Co.
Nissan will buy transfer lines used to machine bearing caps for its new six-cylinder engine, to be used in models launched after 1994. The engines will be assembled at Nissan's new plant in Iwaki City, Japan, which will begin operation in 1993.
Ingersoll's shipments to Japan -- totalling $4.2 million -- are scheduled to begin in March 1993.
"Our agreement with Ingersoll strengthens Nissan's commitment to dealing with qualified American suppliers -- not only of automobile components, but machine tools as well," said Teiji Suzuki, executive director in charge of Nissan's Purchasing Division.
Nissan's decision to buy machine tools from Ingersoll was influenced by the positive experience it has had using U.S.-made machine tools in its Smyrna, Tenn., plant.
Today's announcement is the latest in a series of moves by Nissan to increase its use of North American suppliers.
Earlier this month, Nissan announced a $12 million agreement with Kelsey-Hayes Group's Western Wheel operation. The Michigan-based automotive supplier will develop aluminum wheels for vehicles to be built in Japan.
In November, Nissan's president, Yutaka Kume, unveiled plans to increase North American parts purchases to $3.3 billion in 1994. In 1991, Nissan spent $1.5 billion on parts made in North America.
Ingersoll, based in Rockford, Ill., is a leading manufacturer of machine tools in the U.S.
Nissan, the fourth-largest automaker in the world, manages extensive North American operations, including automotive design, engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing, research and development, consumer and corporate finance, and industrial equipment and textile manufacturring.
