NISSAN SALES CONTINUE TO RISE AS ALTIMA SETS NEW ALL-TIME MONTHLY RECORD; ALTIMA PASSES 100,000 MARK

CARSON, Calif., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Nissan Altima continues to achieve new monthly sales records, recording yet another one in August with 13,952 units sold, boosting Altima sales beyond the 100,000 mark for the model-year-to-date. Record sales of the Altima and continued strong sales of Nissan's other sedans, Pick-up Truck and Pathfinder, fueled Nissan Division of Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A. to 58,626 total vehicle sales in August, a 10 percent increase over a year ago.
"Altima sales continue to increase as exposure of the car grows," said Earl J. Hesterberg, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "August's sales increase further solidifies Altima as the best-selling new nameplate for model year '93, a performance that is driving our overall increase in share and volume. At this pace, Nissan is on track to record its best calendar year sales performance in four years."
The Nissan Altima surpassed the 100,000 sales mark in August, several months ahead of projection. According to Hesterberg, the combination of value for the money, distinctive styling and interior comfort are attributes of the Altima that contribute to its strong consumer appeal. Since its introduction in September 1992, Altima sales are running 67.5 percent ahead of its predecessor in this segment, increasing Nissan's share to 4.5 percent of the mid-sized sedan category. Overall, combined sales of Nissan's sedans were 34,182 in August, up 9.0 percent over the same period last year. Total sedan sales for Nissan this model year are 346,039, an increase of 22 percent over model year 1992.
The Pathfinder, Nissan's entry in the hot sport utility market, had its best month this calendar year and the best August ever, with sales of 4,145 units, a 27 percent increase over a year ago. Pathfinder, with total sales of 41,747, is well on its way to a record model year. Sales of Quest, the industry's best-selling import nameplate minivan, remained strong at 3,351 units in August despite limited availability. Quest sales model-year-to-date total 38,447 units.
The Nissan Truck experienced its second consecutive month of record sales this calendar year, posting 12,578 units sold, up 9.8 percent over last month.
Nissan's U.S.-built-vehicles -- the Quest, Altima, Sentra and Nissan Truck -- accounted for nearly 70 percent of U.S. sales in August. For the calendar-year-to-date, Nissan's U.S.-built vehicle sales are up 57 percent over the same period last year, further solidifying Nissan's investment in America.
Nissan's flagship sports car, the 300ZX, also posted its best month this calendar year, finishing the summer selling season with 1,097 units, up 45 percent over last month.
Total Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A. sales for August, including Infiniti Division, were 63,938 units, up 10.5 percent over the previous year. Nissan Motor Corp. sales for the calendar-year-to-date period totaled 457,264, up 21.5 percent over the same period in 1992.
