NISSAN REVEALS 'ALTIMA' NAME FOR ALL-NEW U.S.-BUILT 1993 MID-SIZE SEDAN
CARSON, Calif., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan Motor Corporation in the U.S.A. today announced plans for the all-new Nissan Altima, which will go on sale this fall as a 1993 model. The stylish, mid-size four- door sedan will be positioned in the award-winning Nissan sedan line-up between Nissan's Maxima and Sentra.
"In concept, design, manufacturing and performance, the Altima breaks new ground for Nissan and for cars in this class," said Earl Hesterberg, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division.
The Altima name was selected after an exhaustive study and selection process. The name suggests "a higher order." Altima also shares a "family resemblance" with the Maxima name. The popular Nissan Maxima was a guidepost for Altima designers and engineers during development.
The Altima's innovative "monoform" styling, which helps create a more rigid, secure passenger compartment and excellent space efficiency. was penned at Nissan Design International in La Jolla, Calif.
Much of the research and development work on the Altima was done in cooperation between Nissan Research and Development, Farmington Hills, Mich. and the Nissan Technical Center, Atsugi, Japan.
The Altima will be built by Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corporation ("NMMC") in Smyrna, Tenn. The facility is currently undergoing a $490 million expansion in preparation for assembly of the new sedan, including installation of Nissan's patented Intelligent Body Assembly System ("IBAS"). IBAS provides precise control of dimensional assembly accuracy within 0.1 mm at 154 critical body measurement points for a previously unobtainable level of structural rigidity and quality.
Once the expansion is completed, NMMC will become the largest single auto manufacturing facility under one roof in the United States, with a total production capacity of 450,000 units per year. The Nissan Sentra and Nissan Truck, currently produced at Smyrna, will continue to be assembled there along with the Altima.
In addition to its exceptional quality standards, the Altima is designed to provide an outstanding level of performance and safety engineering.
