NISSAN RESURGENCE CONTINUES WITH 31.2 PERCENT MAY SALES INCREASE; QUEST SETS ALL-TIME RECORD

CARSON, Calif., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan Division of Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A. today announced May 1993 vehicle sales of 57,327 units, an increase of 31.2 percent over May 1992, marking the Division's eighth consecutive monthly increase.
The overall sales increase improved Nissan's share among the Big Three Imports by an estimated 3.5 full percentage points for the model year-to-date period, vs. the same period last year.
Nissan's volume growth in recent months continues to be fueled by strong sales momentum in the important minivan and sedan segments. The new Quest minivan had its best-ever month in May, recording 5,184 units, to outsell both Mazda MPV and Toyota Previa.
Total Nissan sedan sales were up 30.6 percent in May, marking the company's best sedan month since August 1989. Growth in the sedan segment has helped Nissan boost its car market share by seven-tenths of a percentage point for the calendar year (through April 30) vs. last year. The new Altima delivered strong sales of 9,834, up 50.3 percent over last year's mid-size sedan sales for the same period. This brings Altima's sales to 71,899 units for the model year. Nissan sedan sales were also bolstered by record numbers for the Sentra this model year. Sentra sales for May were 16,834 units, an increase of 31.9 percent over the previous month and 14.5 percent over the previous year. And Nissan's flagship sedan, the Maxima, continued the strong showing for Nissan's sedan line-up with sales of 9,381 units, an increase of 46.6 percent over May 1992.
The combined sales of Nissan vehicles made in America -- Sentra, Altima, Quest and Pick-up Truck -- totaled 58.0 percent of all Nissan vehicles sold in the United States last month. This sales activity places Nissan Division in good standing toward meeting its 1993 goal of having 60 percent of its U.S. sales from vehicles made in America.
The spring selling season for Nissan sports cars also got off to a great start with the 240SX posting 2,398 units sold. The 300ZX sold 853 units in May, a 15.4 percent increase over last year.
"It's clear that our marketing efforts for Altima and Quest are having the intended affect of boosting sales of all Nissan models and driving traffic into the showroom where buyers discover the quality and value in our products," said Earl J. Hesterberg, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division.
Total May 1993 car sales of 40,341 were up 25.4 percent over last year, and total trucks of 16,986 were up 47.6 percent. Calendar year-to-date sales for Nissan Division through May 31, 1993, are 239,784, up 20.6 percent, compared with last year's 200,466 units. Total Nissan Motor Corp. sales for May, including Infiniti Division, were 61,406, up 30 percent over the previous year.
