NISSAN POSTS 23 PERCENT SALES INCREASE FOR JANUARY; STRONG ALTIMA SALES BRING MARKET SHARE GAINS

CARSON, Calif., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A. today announced January total vehicle sales of 41,133 units for its Nissan Division, representing a 23 percent increase over last year's 34,713 units.
Altima continues to be one of Nissan's top-selling models, with January sales of 8,632 units. In addition, Nissan's new Quest minivan continued its record-breaking sales trend with sales of 2,446 units for the month, surpassing January sales for both the Toyota Previa and Mazda MPV for the first time.
"The new Altima and Quest are fueling an overall upswing at Nissan, even amid an industry downturn," said Earl J. Hesterberg, vice president and general manager Nissan Division. "In fact, with the Altima, we've nearly doubled our market segment share in the mid- size sedan category from previous levels."
According to Nissan, the Altima's steady sales increases are a direct result of rising consumer demand for the vehicle. In order to meet this demand, Nissan recently announced plans to produce an additional 2,000 Altimas during the first quarter of 1993.
The Altima has also contributed to increases in Nissan's overall sedan sales, bringing the company closer to its objective to sell more high-volume, value-oriented sedans. For the month of January, total sedan sales were 26,865, a 25.9 percent increase over last year's sedan sales of 22,479 units. In particular, Maxima sales for January were 7,521 units, a 24.3 percent increase over last year's 6,209 units.
Other Nissan models posting increases in January include the Pathfinder, which was up 81.3 percent, with sales of 3,631 units. And total Nissan truck sales for the month were up 29 percent, with sales of 11,845 units, compared with 9,544 for last year.
All percentages are based on daily selling rates.
 All totals exclude Hawaii.
