NISSAN PLANS SAFETY-RELATED RESEARCH IN MASSACHUSETTS
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan today

announced it plans to open a research office in Cambridge, Mass., during the first quarter of 1993.
The office will house small, specialized teams of researchers and will offer opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty and students primarily from Boston-area universities.
The goal of the Nissan Research and Development Inc. facility will be to expand and deepen fundamental knowledge leading to a better understanding of automobile safety.
Faculty members from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University have provided guidance in organizing the facility.
"The research will broaden automotive safety knowledge by bringing in researchers who have excellent experience in fields other than automotive safety research," said Masazumi Sone, director of research for NRD.
Results of the research will be available publicly. In addition, Nissan and other automakers could use the research results as part of vehicle research and development programs to design, engineer and build safer cars and trucks in the future. The laboratory furthers Nissan's localization strategy in North America.
"Nissan is proud to provide a bridge between academic research and automotive safety," said NRD President Ryuhei Narita. "We believe it's the mark of a responsible North American corporate citizen."
In North America, Nissan's operations include styling, engineering, manufacturing, sales, consumer and corporate finance, and industrial and textile equipment. Nissan employs nearly 10,000 people in the United States and Canada.
