NISSAN FINISHES MY'93 AS NO. 2 IMPORT AUTOMAKER IN UNITED STATES WITH 18.6 PERCENT SALES INCREASE; ALTIMA SETS ANOTHER MONTHLY RECORD

CARSON, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan Division of Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A. closed the 1993 model year with 623,009(a) total vehicle sales, establishing Nissan as the second largest import automaker in the United States, ahead of all import competitors except Toyota. This sales surge represents an 18.6 percent increase over the previous model year and the Division's best model year since 1989. Nissan Division also recorded a significant increase in market share for the model year, up approximately five-tenths of a percentage point over last year. September sales of 57,766(a) units were up 13.2 percent over last year, representing the Division's 12th consecutive month of year- over-year increases.
These increases were led by the Altima affordable luxury sedan, which set another monthly sales record in September with 14,181 units, a 237 percent increase over sales of its mid-sized predecessor last year. Sales of the Altima in model year 1993 exceeded expectations, posting 122,804 total units. Strong sales of the Altima, a vehicle designed, developed, and manufactured in the United States, pushed sales of Nissan vehicles built in the United States past 70 percent for the model year. This represents an increase of 50 percent over the 1992 model year.
"The 1993 model year has truly been a milestone for Nissan," said Earl J. Hesterberg, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "The successful launches of the Altima and Quest, combined with a record year for Pathfinder, have helped increase Nissan's penetration in the heart of the market -- sedans, sport utilities, and minivans."
Sales of Nissan's other two sedans, the Maxima and Sentra, also remained strong in September and for the model year. September sales of the Nissan Maxima were 6,062 units, fueling Maxima sales for the model year to 91,364, up 7.6 percent over the 1992 model year. Sales of the popular Sentra totaled 12,475 units in September vs. 11,935 units a year ago.
Combined sales of all three Nissan sedans for the 1993 model year totaled 378,780, a 21 percent increase over the previous year and the Division's best overall sedan model year since 1987.
Pathfinder hit an all-time sales record in the 1993 model year, with 45,978 units, a 30 percent increase over the previous model year. In September, Pathfinder sales were 4,231 units, up 5.8 percent over last September. In its first model year on the market, the Nissan Quest became the industry's best-selling import nameplate minivan. Sales of the Quest for the model year were 41,538 units, giving Nissan 45 percent of the import minivan segment share. Sales of Quest in September were 3,091, a 128 percent increase over last September.
As for Nissan's flagship sports car, sales of the 300ZX increased 29 percent over last September, reaching 1,247 units.
