NISSAN DIVISION GAINS SHARE AMONG BIG THREE IMPORTS WITH 23.1 PERCENT MARCH SALES INCREASE

CARSON, Calif., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan Division of Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A. today announced March 1993 vehicle sales of 49,105 units, a 23.1 percent increase over March 1992 figures, and the company's sixth consecutive month-to-month sales increase.
At the half-way point for the 1993 model year, Nissan's total vehicle sales are up 14.8 percent over the same period last year, boosting Nissan's share of the Big 3 Imports (Toyota, Honda, Nissan) by a full 3.6 percentage points to 27.1 percent.
Leading this increase are the Nissan Altima mid-size sedan, Quest minivan, and Pathfinder sport-utility vehicle. Altima sales in March were 8,289 units, up 112.9 percent over the last year's mid-size sedan sales, bringing total Altima sales to 51,461 units for the model year. Quest set a new monthly sales record in March with 3,682 units, making it American's best-selling import brand minivan for model year 1993. In the sport utility segment, Nissan's Pathfinder posted its fifth consecutive monthly increase with 4,113 units, up 55.6 percent over March 1992.
According to Nissan, every Nissan Division car and truck model experienced a sales increase over February totals.
"Our sales have grown steadily since the debut of the Altima and Quest last fall," said Earl J. Hesterberg, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "We believe the momentum of these new products, along with heightened brand image and awareness of Nissan, have spread to the rest of our model line."
Nissan also posted it first fiscal year sales increase since 1985 for the fiscal year ended March 31, 1993, with a 2.5 percent increase in total vehicle sales over the previous year.
Calendar year-to-date sales for Nissan Division through the month of March are 128,615 units, up 16.9 percent compared with last year's 111,457.
