NISSAN AND MADD TEAM UP FOR SAFE DRIVING MESSAGE

TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- During December, 10,000 Nissan employees nationwide will support a massive safety campaign with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) by attaching red ribbons on their personal vehicles as a reminder to drivers across the country not to drink and drive during the holiday season.
Nissan, together with the MADD National Office and 13 local MADD chapters, will distribute over 10,000 ribbons to employees of its North American operations in California, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, D.C., Ohio, New York, and Canada.
"We want each member of the Nissan family to be an ambassador for safe driving," said Nissan North America President Haruo Ohno. "And we feel the message will go far beyond the 10,000 individuals who participate in this gesture during the holidays. As our employees are enjoying the holiday season, they hopefully will remind everyone to drive responsibly."
MADD plans to distribute 150 million red ribbons by New Year's Day as a symbol of sober driving during this seventh year of the Project Red Ribbon campaign.
Last year from Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve, more than 1,600 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes throughout the country. Thousands more were injured. According to national government statistics, one person is injured in an alcohol-related crash every 90 seconds.
"A simple red ribbon has come to symbolize our nation's intolerance to drunk driving," said Connie Sellecca, MADD's Project Red Ribbon spokesperson. "By encouraging everyone to drive safe and sober, MADD has made Tying One On For Safety' a holiday tradition."
To maximize this safe driving message, Nissan also will unveil a giant red ribbon that will encircle the Nissan North America headquarters in Torrance. The red ribbon will be displayed throughout the holiday season.
Nissan's 10,000 employees in North America are engaged in automotive design, engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing, research and development, and consumer and corporate finance, as well as industrial equipment and textiles.
