NIKE TOWN TO OPEN IN SAN FRANCISCO

BEAVERTON, Ore., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- NIKE Inc. (NYSE: NKE; PSE) announced today that San Francisco has been selected to be a location for a NIKE TOWN retail store. The announcement was made upon the signing of a lease agreement between NIKE and the Madison Realty Partnership, a Cincinnati-based company that will be redeveloping the site.
The 50,000 square foot NIKE TOWN is scheduled to open during the summer of 1996 in San Francisco's downtown Union Square district, at 278 Post St. (in the corner of Post and Stockton streets).
NIKE TOWN is a unique sports store that combines innovative products and inventive design with the imagery of NIKE's great athletes. The company's first NIKE TOWN, located in Portland, Ore., was named "1992 Store of the Year" by Money Magazine. The second store, in downtown Chicago, has been named the city's number one retail tourist attraction by Crain's Chicago Business. Two more NIKE TOWNs -- in Orange County, Calif., and Atlanta -- opened earlier this year.
NIKE TOWN's design concept incorporates sports, fitness, entertainment, history and product innovation, all in one. NIKE TOWN San Francisco will have the same "town square" concept as the other four stores, but will have an expanded multi-media presentation as well as an area designed for special events that will accommodate up to 150 people. The store will have three floors of retail selling space, which will be divided into "pavilions" that each feature a different line of NIKE footwear and apparel.
"We're going to be introducing some surprises in NIKE TOWN San Francisco because when this store opens in 1996, retailing will be a whole new ballgame," said John Farnum, NIKE Environmental Design creative director. "We're expanding on the concept of a sports retail theater and are planning to present a store that is inspirational, energetic and eventful."
According to Larry Hohl, NIKE Retail vice president, San Francisco's rich sports heritage and the affinity of its residents for sports and outdoor recreation made the city a natural choice for a NIKE TOWN store.
"San Francisco truly is a great sports town, with some of the world's best sports fans," said Hohl. "All of this combines to make it the perfect location for NIKE TOWN."
NIKE Inc., the world's leading sports and fitness company, is based in Beaverton, a suburb of Portland.
