NIKE, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES HOST HIGH SCHOOL HOOP STARS APRIL 10

CHICAGO, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicagoland hoops fans had to wait until after his third year in college and a new Bulls contract to see the best North Carolina basketball player perform.
This year, Chicago hoops fans -- and a national television audience -- get to see him mid-way through his senior year in high school.
Jerry Stackhouse, the most celebrated North Carolina prep basketball player since Michael Jordan, comes to Chicago in April, and he's bringing a bunch of friends with him. Stackhouse will headline the first NIKE/Chicago Sun-Times All-American Game at the Rosemont Horizon April 10.
The NIKE/Sun-Times Game, which will generate funds for the Chicago public high schools' extracurricular programs, will pit All-American players from around the country against a team of Illinois State All- Stars. The game, which will begin at 7 p.m. CST, will be televised by ESPN. Telecast time will be announced later. The All-American game will be preceded at 5 p.m. CST by another All-Star contest that pits Chicago city players against the best from the Chicago suburbs.
The night of prep hoops also features honorary coaches and ESPN commentators Jim Valvano and Dick Vitale plus "commissioners" Al McGuire, the former Marquette coach and current CBS commentator, and Bob Hurley, high school coaching legend at St. Anthony's of Jersey City, N.J., and father of Duke All-American senior Bobby Hurley.
The NIKE/Sun-Times Game will spotlight some of the finest young basketball players in America. "We used to have to wait until their college years to see the talents of the Michael Jordans and David Robinsons of basketball showcased before a national television audience," said Richard K. Donahue, NIKE president and chief operating officer. "Now we will be able to see just how athletic and exciting the best high school players in the country can be. The event also will help keep Chicago high school extracurricular activities alive -- providing a well-rounded prep experience that we at NIKE believe is at the core of education today."
Tom Foster, senior vice president for consumer sales & marketing at the Chicago Sun-Times, said the newspaper, like NIKE, is committed to helping provide for the future of sports, music and other extracurricular activities that focus young people's after-school hours on positive pursuits. The partnership is a natural one, he added.
"We've partnered with NIKE because the company does so much for young people and for the community and because this event supports a good cause -- Chicago prep activities," Foster said. "The NIKE/Sun- Times All-American games will become the premier event of its kind, and further enhance the Sun-Times' reputation in prep sports."
The All-American squad, representing the best of the country's high school players, will include:
-- Jerry Stackhouse, already a legend in North Carolina, where he is said to be the best player in high school since Chicago's own raging Bull, Michael Jordan. Named Player of the Year, Stackhouse, a small forward, will enroll at the University of North Carolina as a freshman in September.
-- Chicago's Rashard Griffith, a physical presence in the paint, is expected to dominate when he steps onto the Big Ten hardwood as a Wisconsin Badger next fall for coach Stu Jackson. The 6'11" center has anchored the starting five at Chicago's King High School for four years.
-- Another Chicago prep phenomenon, Kiwane Garris, from Westinghouse High School, already is a threat from anywhere on the perimeter and will have the opportunity to test Griffith's Big Ten impact when he enrolls at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in the fall.
-- Jacque Vaughn, considered by many prep experts as the best all- around guard in the country, will move east to attend the University of Kansas this fall. He comes with a hoops pedigree, graduating this spring from Muir High School of Pasadena, Calif., the high school of Stacy Augmon, a national champion at UNLV and now starting guard for the Atlanta Hawks.
The prep stars will be feted throughout the weekend, including a Yankee-White Sox game Friday afternoon at Comiskey Park, sightseeing of the city, and shopping on Michigan Avenue at NIKE Town. When they get down to business, though, NIKE's manager of basketball events, Rich Sheubrooks, predicts a spectacular evening of hoops at the Rosemont Horizon.
"Mix together Dick Vitale with Jerry Stackhouse, Al McGuire with Rashard Griffith, Jim Valvano with Jacque Vaughn and Bob Hurley with Kiwane Garris, and you've got basketball from floor to rafter, end-to- end, and sideline-to-sideline," Sheubrooks predicts. "The Rosemont will be rocking in April, no doubt about it."
WMAQ-AM, another participating sponsor, will carry live spot coverage of the event.
 Ticket information will be forthcoming.
