WITH tiny white embellishments trailing across her midriff and her face, Monica Dogra of Dhobi Ghat fame took to the stage at Shroom Lado Sarai as the motley crowd of night birds cheered her on, their glasses filled with libations dangerously close to spilling over.

As the pretty face and soulful voice of the Mumbai- based band Shaa'ir + Func, Monica is no stranger to Delhi's music fans.

And on Friday night, her powerful vocals, coupled with the magic of the psychedelic lights, got the pretty young things to dance to the band's electrorock music, making us want to unearth the secret behind the balancing act they carried out inches above the ground on their high stilettos.

Monica seemed unfazed by a couple of young guns trying to rattle her by their shouts of " desi, we want desi" as she continued in her American- accented English. It doesn't seem like she had to put on an actor's mask for her role in Kiran Rao's movie as her on- screen persona is as lively as her off- screen self.

" I was never not an actor, I was never not a singer," Monica said.

She recalled the days when she used to laugh at film stars not lifting a finger and getting their work done by others. " Since I've been working my butt off, I now realise why they do what they do," she said. Charged after her recent scuba- diving holiday, she is all set to rock the music scene and silver screen.
