NIELSEN ACQUIRES SCANNER APPLICATIONS FOR $20 MILLION

 NORTHBROOK, Ill., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Nielsen Marketing Research (NMR USA) today announced the signing of a letter of intent for Nielsen to acquire a 20 percent stake in Scanner Applications, a scanner-based promotions company based in Cincinnati. Nielsen will have the option to acquire Scanner Applications for up to $20 million, based on that company's performance. Under the terms of the agreement, Scanner Applications will remain a separate operating division, and the two companies will share Nielsen's information collections and data processing capabilities.
 The partnership gives Nielsen an entry into the promotion-tracking component of efficient consumer response (ECR). Doug Adams, president, efficient consumer response division and operational applications division, said, "The partnership will provide greater efficiencies for manufacturer promotions, using Scanner Applications' Scanner Promote system, coupled with Nielsen's rapid information processing infrastructure. Working together, we can provide our clients with the information they need, when they need it, to maximize their promotion dollars."
 Scanner Application's Scanner Promote system focuses on eliminating inefficiencies in current promotion practices by paying retailers for what they sell during a promotion period, not what they buy. The net result is that manufacturers maximize their promotion dollars, and participating retailers earn incrementally more.

 The agreement represents a second significant step in Nielsen's ECR program development. "This is the second initiative the marketplace has seen in as many months," he said, referring to Nielsen's recent partnership with Non-Stop Logistics. "We are now not only able to improve in the area of product replenishment, we are also able to provide manufacturers with more timely reports on the success of their promotions."
