NIELSEN, PIB ANNOUNCE JOINT VENTURE

 NORTHBROOK, Ill., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Nielsen Marketing Research USA (NMR USA) announced the formation of a joint venture with Promotion Information Bureau (PIB) to provide a specialized scanning-based information service designed especially for the alcoholic beverage industry.
 This new service known as LiquorScan(TM), which tracks spirits and beer, and WineScan(TM), which tracks wine, champagne, and coolers, is now available on a monthly basis. Information on other categories, including carbonated beverages, cigarettes and snacks, will also be provided.
 This joint venture provides a major benefit to beverage/alcohol marketers because it creates an information service covering the primary classes of trade in which the industry markets products. Operationally, the joint venture combines the Nielsen food store panel and technological expertise with PIB's liquor store panel and industry knowledge to focus on the information needs of this industry.
 Van Lefferdink, PIB president, will head the joint venture, staffed by experienced personnel from PIB and Nielsen. "PIB is the leading marketing information source dedicated to the beverage/alcohol industry," he says. "This partnership takes advantage of the strengths of both companies and truly creates a breakthrough service for this industry. Scanners have provided the retailer with a high level of sophistication in managing their business. The successful manufacturers will respond by working closely with the retailer to use scanning information to improve their combined marketing efforts."
 Nielsen officials are also enthusiastic about the new venture.

"The scanning information, combined with Nielsen Software and Systems capabilities, will greatly increase the speed and accuracy by which customers make important business decisions."
 PIB, founded eight years ago, provides a wide range of marketing information services for the industry. These include Promotrac(TM), Featuretrac(TM), Shelftrac(TM), Pricetrac(TM), and On-Trac(TM), which provide results on off-shelf display, feature ads by retailers, and store and bar distribution and merchandising. Virtually all beverage/alcohol manufacturers use PIB's services.
