NHTSA HONORS DOMINO'S PIZZA, INC., FOR PROMOTING SAFETY BELTS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Marion C. Blakey, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Thomas S. Monaghan, president and founder of Domino's Pizza, Inc., for the company's efforts to promote safety belt use among its employees and the American public.
"Domino's should take great pride in the leadership role it has played in the battle against the number one killer of American young people -- motor vehicle crashes," Blakey said.
Domino's Pizza started promoting safety belt use nationwide in 1991 with the creation of "The Buckle Up Registry" newsletter, which it continues to underwrite. The newsletter enables traffic safety advocates across the country to share information and ideas about effective programs and strategies. Domino's Pizza also created a buckle-up pledge program aimed at teens called "Swear to Wear It" and manufactured cardboard picture frames emblazoned with the slogan "Buckle Up for Me." Over 1 million frames were distributed free to consumers by Domino's Pizza stores and safety belt advocates.
In addition to encouraging consumers to wear safety belts, Domino's Pizza corporate policy requires employees to buckle up when driving on the job. Domino's Pizza is the world's largest pizza delivery company. Of the company's 100,000 employees, 50,000 are delivery team members.
"Domino's Pizza is an excellent example of how good business and good corporate citizenship go hand-in-hand," said Blakey.
The National Safety Belt Coalition nominated Domino's Pizza for the NHTSA Certificate of Appreciation. The coalition was created in 1991 by NHTSA and the National Safety Council to encourage American business to get involved in the nationwide effort to increase safety belt use. Domino's Pizza was one of the coalition's first members.
"This award shows how government and the private sector can work together to achieve important social goals. By encouraging motorists to buckle up we save American lives, and American businesses save money, which makes our products more competitive in the global marketplace," said Kim Ross, director of the National Safety Belt Coalition. "Buckling up is a winning strategy for everyone involved."
In 1992, the United States experienced 39,500 motor vehicle fatalities, the lowest number in 30 years. NHTSA officials attribute the lower fatality rate, in part, to greater safety belt use. Surveys show that 62 percent of drivers and front seat passengers nationwide buckle up.
Domino's Pizza, Inc., which was founded in 1960, has 5,300 stores across the United States and in 31 international markets.
