NGV ECOTRANS TECHNOLOGY CENTER OPENS IN LOS ANGELES; CENTER TO CONVERT MORE THAN 100 VEHICLES A MONTH TO NATURAL GAS POWER

LOS ANGELES, April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- NGV Ecotrans Technology Center, one of the country's leading natural gas vehicle conversion companies, has moved to a new, larger state-of-the-art facility in East Los Angeles, company officals announced.
NGV Ecotrans is a partnership of NGV Development Corp. of Long Beach, Calif., and Ecotrans Aftermarket Corp., a Southern California Gas Co. subsidiary. The center converts new and existing conventionally fueled vehicles to natural gas power and operates a California Air Resources Board-certified and Environmental Protection Agency-recognized vehicle emissions laboratory.
The 36,000-square-foot conversion center is situated on an 11-acre site within the East Los Angeles Enterprise Zone. This area has been designated by the state of California as an economically disadvantaged area which is targeted for special tax incentives for new and expanding businesses. The center currently employs about 30 workers and plans to increase the number to more than 100 workers over the next two years.
"Our new headquarters in East Los Angeles allows us to become the leading NGV conversion, sales and service center in the country," said John M. Maddox, general manager of NGV Ecotrans. "After outgrowing our original facility in Long Beach, we now have the space and capability of converting more than 100 vehicles a month."
NGV Ecotrans currently has orders for more than 800 vehicle conversions. Among the contracts recently awarded to NGV Ecotrans is one from Mesa Environmental for the conversion of 449 U.S. Postal Service vehicles.
Other customers include March Air Force Base in Riverside, Calif., the City of Corona, SunLine Transit in Thousand Palms and several cities in the Coachella Valley. NGV Ecotrans, through one of its joint venture partners, has been selected to negotiate with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Colorado for the conversion of up to 2,000 vehicles to natural gas.
Larry Ozier, manager of sales and operations for NGV Ecotrans, stated: "Our facility has the capability to convert a wide range of vehicles in both bi-fuel and dedicated versions using a variety of after-market conversion systems. These systems meet the standards set by the California Air Resources Board for and are fully warranted and serviced by NGV Ecotrans for up to 36,000 miles or 36 months.
"As air quality standards grow more stringent and the number of locations where the public can refuel NGVs increases, we expect our business to grow substantially and include the everyday environmentally conscious consumer in addition to municipalities and private fleets," said Ozier.
"While Southern California has the distinction of being the smog capital of the nation, it more importantly is becoming the advanced transportation center of the world, and NGV Ecotrans is a major player in that move to put cleaner-burning vehicles on our roads and highways," he added.
The center is located at 2424 E. Olympic Blvd. The telephone number is 213-627-3333, and the fax number is 213-627-2226.
