NGES second-grade teachers give presentation at conference.

GRAFTON - On Nov. 9, the North Grafton Elementary School second-grade teacher team of Beth Boyle, Lauren Fletcher, Amy McLaughlin, Emily Mascarin and Cathy Perch presented their Math Workshop model at the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England Fall Conference. The ATMNE conference was being help Nov. 9-10 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, R.I.

During their presentation, "Math Workshop: Engages, Enlightens and Extends Mathematical Thinking," the teachers shared how they successfully implement Math Workshop on a daily basis in their classrooms. Audience members experienced Math Workshop as a learner and reflect on it as a teacher. They provided the template they use to organize their work and showed a short video of the students in action.

Math Workshop is a unique delivery system of the math curriculum. It consists of a mini lesson and then three or four rotations with one rotation teacher led and then a whole group reflection. Math Workshop allows students to learn at their ability level, experience success and enjoy math.

"We are so proud that the ATMNE selected our second grade team to present their Math Workshop. The team worked hard to implement this approach which allows children at all different math levels to work both in small groups and with a teacher to develop their math skills," said Mrs. Brenda Plainte, Principal of North Grafton Elementary School.
