NFIB RESPONSE TO VICE PRESIDENT GORE'S COMMENTS ON HEALTH CARE HEARING INVITATION

WASHINGTON, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's largest small- business advocacy organization, the National Federation of Independent Business, has been an active force in the business community for health care reform for years. NFIB is a founding member of the Healthcare Equity Action League (HEAL), the business community's largest health care reform coalition, and has worked with both the National Governors Association and conservative democrats to improve and refine managed competition.
NFIB declined an invitation to appear before the administration's Health Care Task Force today because the group has already made up its mind on the most important small employer issue: forcing small firms to provide health insurance for all present and future workers.
NFIB Vice President John Motley said that the decision to impose an employer mandate before the Task Force held public hearings is disappointing in the extreme. Motley, who has met with Task Force Chairman Ira Magaziner at length in the past, said that he made it clear that the only portion of the administration's proposal that is non-negotiable for small-business owners is the mandate.
The task force does include anyone who has met a payroll or had to purchase health insurance for employees. Unfortunately, holding a public hearing on such short notice and allowing witnesses only three minutes to discuss such an important has confirmed NFIB's worst fears -- it is simply too little, too late.
Motley said NFIB will continue to work with the administration and members of Congress who are interested in crafting a health care reform package that can be enacted this year without destroying small business jobs. Small-business owners desperately want health care reform that works, said Motley, but not at the price of making them responsible for the health care of all working Americans.
