NEXT STOP ON THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY: PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOLS; NATION'S LARGEST APPLICATION OF COMPUTER-BASED LEARNING

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Palm Beach County Schools and Computer Curriculum Corporation, a unit of Paramount Communications, Inc. (NYSE: PCI), announced that 7,500 computer work stations will be installed throughout the Florida school system's 75 elementary schools. Teachers will begin using SuccessMaker(TM), Computer Curriculum's acclaimed multimedia learning system, to educate the district's 41,380 students in grades 2-5. The educational software installment marks the largest computer-based learning system in the country, and the largest installation in the history of the industry.
"We're proud of this historic partnership with Palm Beach County Schools," said Ron Fortune, president and chief executive officer of Computer Curriculum. "The nation's largest adoption of interactive multimedia learning will create a new education lane on the information highway."
SuccessMaker is the newest version of the personalized learning systems Computer Curriculum has been creating since the company was founded in 1967. SuccessMaker includes 3,000 hours of curriculum featuring full-motion video, animation, computer graphics, and digitized sound to produce an exciting, interactive learning environment that teachers can use to meet the individual needs of students. Subjects include mathematics, reading, language arts, writing, science, and life skills.
Computer Curriculum's Palm Beach County multimedia system will provide each classroom in every elementary school with approximately four computers. Approximately 1,600 elementary school teachers in the district will be fully trained to ensure the technology is a valuable resource for educators -- and that the learning process remains at the direction of the teacher.
"We believe our partnership with the Palm Beach School District is a significant step toward making a difference in how we educate our children," Fortune said. "SuccessMaker is a revolutionary education concept. It incorporates a measure of accountability -- what all educators, parents, and the public agree is necessary for real and meaningful progress. Never before has a school district the size of Palm Beach County had an opportunity to positively impact such a large and diverse student body through computer-based learning."
SuccessMaker's foundation is based on the unique learning approach of customizing the learning experience based on the student's ability. It chooses which of the thousands of activities within a program will best suit -- and educate -- the student. This new method replaces the rote learning system used by other programs, which move every student through the same set of sequences regardless of ability.
SuccessMaker's instruction is personalized and self-paced. It realizes when a student has mastered a concept and moves him or her to the next level. When a student has difficulty with a concept, SuccessMaker generates activities and tutorials to improve the student's performance. This helps students build not only knowledge, but self-esteem and confidence as well.
Meanwhile, teachers have instant and constant access to the progress of an individual student -- or the entire class. Teachers can instantly identify students who need their help on a subject, and use these reports for important parent-teacher interaction.
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Computer Curriculum Corp. pioneered technology-based learning systems in 1967. Today its multimedia learning systems provide instruction to over one million students in thousands of schools across the country. Computer Curriculum Corporation is a division of Paramount Publishing, the world's largest publisher of educational materials. Paramount Publishing is the publishing operation of Paramount Communications, Inc., a global entertainment and publishing company.
