NEXT GENERATION SMARTANTENNA TECHNOLOGY REDUCES COSTS, INCREASES SERVICE QUALITY, COVERAGE, FOR DIGITAL PCS PROVIDERS

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Providers of emerging digital personal communications services (PCS) can build networks offering higher quality and greater coverage at lower cost with next generation SmartAntenna technology from Northern Telecom.
This new technology, announced today at Telocator's 45th annual convention being held at the New Orleans Convention Center, offers for the first time the ability to directly track the location of digital mobile telephones, ensuring the highest quality service.
"The cost of deploying the required network infrastructure is perhaps the most significant barrier to market entry for potential new PCS providers," said Dave Twyver, group vice president, Wireless Systems, Northern Telecom. "Our next generation SmartAntenna technology lowers this barrier, offering lower cost and higher performance than wireless networks based on more conventional antennas."
Northern Telecom's SmartAntenna product employs adaptive, flat plate technology which allows mobile telephones to be located and tracked within a given cell or coverage area using narrow radio beams. This improves antenna efficiency or gain, and reduces potential interference from other radio sources.
Cost and complexity of engineering, deploying, and operating a PCS network using this next generation antenna technology are reduced because higher gain results in greater range, producing a larger coverage area per antenna and, thus, reducing the number of cells required in a given network.
Higher gain operation also provides improved building penetration for better in-building service. Its increased receive sensitivity allows mobile handsets to transmit at lower power, resulting in longer battery life, increased talk time and, eventually, smaller batteries and lighter handsets.
SmartAntenna technology allows cells to be shaped to accommodate variations in terrain by varying the gain of individual radio beams. And the Northern Telecom SmartAntenna product's compact design relieves the aesthetic and environmental concerns associated with conventional antennas.
Northern Telecom, a leading global telecommunications equipment manufacturer and researcher, offers a full PCS product portfolio, including all switching, radio, and software components essential to deploying licensed and unlicensed PCS networks.
