NEWVECTOR, MOTOROLA TO JOIN FOR PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE: INNOVATIVE SYSTEMS TO BE OFFERED FIRST IN DENVER

 NEWVECTOR, MOTOROLA TO JOIN FOR PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE:
 INNOVATIVE SYSTEMS TO BE OFFERED FIRST IN DENVER
 BELLEVUE, Wash., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- U S WEST NewVector Group and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) this week announced their intent to jointly trial a futuristic telecommunications service, based on a personal phone number that follows its user to mobile or stationary locations.
 The service, which will enable users to have a single personal telephone number making them immediately and constantly accessible at all locations, will be installed early next year in Denver on a trial basis, explained John DeFeo, president and chief executive officer of U S WEST NewVector Group.
 Personal communications service, designed with Motorola's Personal Phone Service 800 (PPS(TM)800), uses wired and wireless networks already in place to provide complete accessibility, and provides uniform user- defined features at all user locations, DeFeo explained.
 Motorola's pocket-sized personal communicator will be used in the trial. It has cordless features similar to a cordless phone when the user is near the home or office, as well as cellular phone features when the user is mobile. Thus the trial will utilize both the existing landline and cellular networks.
 "Little more than five years ago, this was considered the wave of the future -- telecommunications numbers based on people rather than locations such as the home, office or car," DeFeo said. "Now the future is here and NewVector customers will be able to experience it firsthand.
 "We are vitally interested in this because it allows our customers to define their own features and functions and it meets their demand of wanting to be accessible any time, at any place," DeFeo added. "We can blend technologies such as wireline, intelligent networks, cellular microcells, and tools such as PBX systems and cordless phones to offer a communications system that can accommodate each individual user's unique needs."
 Besides the pocket-sized handset, other key components of the new service are a charger and a personal base station which can be located in a customer's home or office, DeFeo explained.
 "The handset first seeks to operate on its personal base station and works as a cordless phone until the user moves from the personal base station range and into cellular ranges," DeFeo said. "At this point, the handset enters a cellular network. When the personal number is dialed, the call is delivered to the handset no matter where the user is located."
 The technology platform for the trial is Narrow-band Advanced Mobile Phone Service (NAMPS) which can triple cellular network call capacity, enhance voice transmission quality, and provide numerous intelligent messaging services.
 User-defined features to be offered with the service include allowing the user to receive only calls from pre-identified people, and direct other calls to voice mail. When operating in the cellular mode, users also can access Motorola's Digital Messaging Services which include:
 -- Voice Mail Status, whereby a voice mail box automatically alerts the customer when "voice mail" is received;
 -- Call-Back Number, whereby a call-back number is deposited in the PPS handset. If the communications line is busy or disengaged, the number is "deposited" when the unit returns to service.
 -- Short Messaging, whereby users receive text messages of up to 14 characters on the handset's display.
 DeFeo said NewVector plans to install several Motorola microcells in its Denver system to trial these new services to new customer segments.
 During the trial period in Denver, he said, NewVector will determine how new telecommunications services can best meet customers' needs.
 U S WEST Cellular, a division of U S WEST NewVector Group, Inc., will conduct the trial.
