NEWSPAPER GUILD RATIFIES CONTRACT WITH THE BEACON JOURNAL

 AKRON, Ohio, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Beacon Journal announced today that members of Akron Newspaper Guild Local 7 had ratified a new contract with the newspaper. The Guild represents 146 writers, reporters, photographers, artists and some editors in the Newsroom, and four staffers in the maintenance department. The previous contract had expired in October, 1992.
 Union leaders notified the newspaper that the three-year contract was ratified by members Friday afternoon.
 Beacon Journal spokesperson Mindy Aleman said the new contract matched or exceeded other Guild settlements made in Ohio and in the industry in the past year.
 "The new contract provides good wage increases and benefits, which position the newspaper as one of the highest paying in the country for a newspaper its size. It also contains improvements in the way the company manages the news reporting operations," Aleman said.
 The key provisions of the contract, Aleman said, included:
 -- Improved flexibility in the use of correspondents to enhance news coverage;
 -- Greater contribution to the health plan by part-timers to help offset increased health care costs.
 The contract also provides many improvements for the workforce, Aleman said, including:
 -- A weekly wage increase totalling $75 or 9.4 percent over the term of the three-year contract;
 -- An $800 signing bonus to top scale, prorated to most other classifications;
 -- Retention of health care benefits for future retirees under the same provisions for active employees.
 Reporters will receive $795 a week after four years of experience.
 "We believe the contract will help us retain our position as a top quality news choice in Ohio," Aleman said.
 Aleman noted that the Beacon Journal has now concluded contracts with four of its unions, including the Teamster drivers and district managers, the paperhandlers and the printers.
 Negotiations are also continuing with the Engravers and the Press Operators.
