NEWSCHANNEL BUILDING LOCAL NETWORK AND ADDING STAFF; 24-HOUR SERVICE UNVEILED TO INDUSTRY AT ATLANTIC CABLE SHOW

/ADVANCE/ ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- NewsChannel, the Lenfest Group's new, 24-hour cable news service, now has the backing of 10 Philadelphia-area newspapers as well as the New York Times News Service, George Strimel, president of Lenfest Programming Services, announced today at the opening of the Atlantic Cable Show.
Strimel said the newspaper-based NewsChannel has signed agreements with the 10 newspapers, with daily circulation in excess of 500,000, and that several others are expected to join the news provider network within the next few months.
"The participation of the area newspapers is what makes NewsChannel a truly unique news and information service," commented Strimel. "We are committed to providing viewers with objective, relevant, reliable news, and for local news, the alliance with the newspapers will help us meet that objective."
NewsChannel recently disclosed that the New York Times Company had signed an agreement to provide national and international stories to the cable channel through its New York Times News Service. These stories would originate from bureaus in 12 U.S. and 24 foreign cities.
Strimel also announced the first staffing assignments at NewsChannel. The day-to-day news operation will be headed by Mike Renshaw, a veteran print journalist and former editor of the Bucks County Courier Times. He will serve as the news director.
Three producers have also been hired: Carlo Mastricolo, a former photo editor at The Boston Globe and The New York Times; Susan Greatorex, formerly of WHYY-TV; and Jeff Meade, who held editorial positions at a number of suburban Philadelphia newspapers.
Lenfest Programming is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lenfest Group, which is one of the nation's largest cable television multi-system operators. In the Philadelphia area, it owns and operates the Suburban Cable television systems. Lenfest Programming is also responsible for producing the Philadelphia Mummers Parade, America's most original New Year's Day celebration.
