NO DEFENCE FOR COURT'MISSING'

A STAGGERING 150,000 defendants fail to turn up for court appearances every year, it was revealed yesterday. The Magistrates Association said almost one-in-10 of their cases could not go ahead. Glen Smyth, chairman of the Met Police Federation, called it "a disgrace". The Home Office said a new National Enforcement Service will focus on the problem.

PROSTATE TEST IN 10 MINUTES

AN instant prostate cancer test was given the go-ahead yesterday. GPs will be able to analyse blood samples for signs of the disease in 10 minutes, instead of sending them away to labs. PSA watch has been developed by a Rugby firm.

BRIT SATELLITE GOESUPAT LAST

A ROCKET carrying a British military communications satellite finally blasted into space last night. A 24-hour equipment glitch had delayed the launch of the Ariane rocket from the European spaceport in French Guiana with the first of three Skynet satellites.
