 NEWS EXECUTIVE NAMED TO MINNESOTA POWER BOARD
 DULUTH, Minn., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Mary Junck, on extended leave


of absence from Knight-Ridder newspapers, has been named to serve on the board of directors of Minnesota Power (NYSE: MPL). The board is expanded from 12 to 13 members, all but one of whom are "outside," non- employee directors.
 Junck, 44, was most recently publisher and president of the St. Paul Pioneer Press and is involved in a variety of civic and professional organizations including the United Way, St. Paul Chamber of Commerce, University of Minnesota Foundation, Society of Professional Journalists and the Minnesota Business Partnership.
 "Mary is a highly qualified person who brings extensive business, executive and civic experience to Minnesota Power's board," said Arend J. Sandbulte, chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Duluth-based company.
 Mary Junck holds bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism and is a native of Ogden, Iowa. She is married to Ralph Gibson and has a stepson, Scott Gibson, 17, and a daughter, Betty, 3.
 Minnesota Power is a diversified investor-owned electric company serving much of upper Minnesota with business interests in paper making and recycling, coal mining, and water and wastewater treatment services.
