NEWS BRIEFS: VAC SHIPMENTS UP AGAIN IN OCTOBER...PORTABLE APPLIANCES SHOW MORE STRENGTH.
Manufacturers' shipments of full-sized vacuum cleaners increased 4.7 percent to 1,859,908 in October. Only in 2000 did the industry have a bigger October, at 1,914,997 machines.
The Vacuum Cleaner Manufacturers Association said the total for the year to date was revised. At 16,672,905 machines, it was up 1.7 percent. Last year was the industry's biggest, ending at 19,746,901 units.
PORTABLE APPLIANCES SHOW MORE STRENGTH
Manufacturers' domestic shipments of portable appliances in October were up in dollars and units, and for the year to date, only dollars on the food side were down.
In cooking and food processing, increases were 6.1 percent in dollars to $293,463,223 and 16.8 percent in units to 15,208,949. Through 10 months, dollars declined 2.7 percent to $1,634,099,611 while units grew 6.9 percent to 86,200,995.
Air treatment in October rose 9.3 percent in dollars to $62,865,522 and scored the fourth month of big double-digit increases in units at 45.5 percent to 3,430,947. For the year to date, dollar growth reached 9 percent at $303,077,173 and units were up 37 percent to 15,183,156.
