NEWLY OPENED ARCO MINE WILL BE AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST UNDERGROUND COAL MINE WHEN FULLY OPERATIONAL NEXT YEAR

DENVER, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCO Coal Co. today announced startup of a new coal mine in Australia which, when fully operational next year, will be Australia's largest underground coal mine, producing more than 4.5 million tons per year.
In announcing completion and startup of the first longwall at Gordonstone in the Bowen Basin area of Central Queensland, ARCO Coal Co. President Anthony Fernandes said: "With its first of two highly productive longwalls now in place, Gordonstone is well positioned to make deliveries of high-quality coking and steam coal to steel and utility compa shareholder. (Denver-based ARCO Coal Co., a division of Los Angeles-based ARCO, is the parent company to ARCO Coal Australia.) Other shareholders are Mitsui Gordonstone Investment Pty. Ltd. (15 percent) and Lend Lease Development Capital Ltd. (5 percent).
ARCO Coal Australia Inc. President Steve Shapiro said: "The massive and complex mining equipment was installed with efficiency and safety and is a tribute to the entire mining team at Gordonstone."
By 1994, when Gordonstone is fully operational, ARCO Coal Australia will be one of the largest coal producers in Australia. The company currently operates the Curragh mine, which will produce more than 7 million gross tons of steam and coking coal per year. It also holds a 31.4 percent interest in the Blair Athol mine, which produces almost 10 million tons of steam coal annually. Both of these surface mines are also located in central Queensland.
ARCO Coal Co. expects to produce more than 50 million tons of coal annually from its combined U.S. and Australian operations in 1994. In the United States, ARCO Coal will be able to produce almost 40 million tons per year from its Black Thunder surface mine in Wyoming (the largest coal mine in the Western Hemisphere) and its West Elk underground longwall mine in Colorado.
