NEWBRIDGE SUPPLIES PRODUCTS FOR ECO 92 EARTH SUMMIT
 COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK IN BRAZIL
KANATA, Ontario, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Newbridge Networks Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: NNCXF; Toronto) announced today that the company's Brazilian distributor, Moddata S.A., has supplied Newbridge Mainstreet(R) products for an E-1 digital network built by Telerj for use by delegates to the ECO 92 Earth Summit meeting taking place this week in Rio de Janeiro. Telerj is the telephone operating company in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
The network allows ECO 92 participants and the attendant international press use of the most advanced digital technology to move the large volume of telecommunications traffic generated at the conference. The entire network as supplied by Moddata S.A., including the Newbridge products, is estimated to be worth US$4.5 million.
The equipment is installed in Rio Centro, the main site of ECO 92 activities, as well as in 11 other operational centers of Telerj.
In January 1992 Moddata S.A., specifying Newbridge equipment, was awarded a contract with Embratel, the principal Brazilian long distance and international carrier, to build a national high speed digital data communications network. The contract carries a value to Moddata S.A. of more than US$30 million, the majority of which is for Newbridge equipment.
In view of recently awarded contracts and Brazil's rapidly developing telecommunications infrastructure, serving a population of more than 150 million people, Newbridge has announced plans to open an office in Rio de Janeiro to support and complement its Brazilian distributor, Moddata S.A.
