NEWBRIDGE MICROSYSTEMS ANNOUNCES NEW PRODUCTS, PRICING AND SUPPORT FOR DES ENCRYPTION CHIPS

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Citing recent developments in the security industry including the announcement of the government- endorsed Clipper chip, Newbridge Microsystems today announced new products, reduced prices and increased support for its family of DES (Data Encryption Standard) processors.
"More people are demanding security both for communications and for stored information," said Jim Roche, vice president of marketing and sales at Newbridge Microsystems. "Encryption is widely acknowledged as the best way to provide that security, and DES is the most used encryption standard. It is fast, secure, government approved and relatively inexpensive to implement in silicon. With the recent introduction of the government's Clipper chip, many of our customers have reiterated their support of DES and are actively designing new DES- based products to take advantage of the growing encryption market."
Newbridge Microsystems recently reaffirmed its commitment to the security industry by reducing the price of its existing DES processors.
Now available for less than $8.00 in 500 piece quantities, the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) approved CA20C03W is pin-compatible with the Western Digital WD20C03 family. And through an agreement with Western Digital, Newbridge will assume support of all existing Western Digital customers for the 20C03. At the same time, Newbridge launched a family of CA95C68, 18 and 09 DES chips which are pin-compatible with AMD and VLSI Technology devices but offer better performance and enhanced funtionality. Available in TQFP (Thin Quad Flat Pack) surface-mount packages, these devices are being designed into thin PCMCIA cards to provide security for laptops. They are also being designed into automated teller machines, point of sale terminals, TV signal scramblers, communication products, computers and more. The CA95C68, 18 and 09 are all NIST-certified and are in production now. Prices start at under $22.00 in 500 piece quantities.
The price reductions and additions to the product family announced today are intended to lower the barriers of entry to the encryption market and to help proliferate the use of DES technology. Adam Chowaniec, general manager of Newbridge Microsystems, commented, "These developments will further entrench Newbridge as a leading supplier of DES encryptors. Our products are highly competitive and offer features and performance not available from other vendors. Our long-term commitment to this industry has allowed us to form strong partnerships through which we will continue to deliver new product offerings."
