NEWBRIDGE CHOSEN BY KANSAS CITY POWER AND LIGHT TO SUPPLY PRODUCTS FOR DIGITAL NETWORK

KANATA, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Newbridge Networks (NASDAQ-NMS: NNCXF) has been awarded a contract by Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) (NYSE: KLT) to supply intelligent digital networking equipment for the expansion of the KCP&L fiber optic and microwave-based digital network. Under the terms of the contract Newbridge will install 3600 MainStreet(R) Bandwidth Manager, 3645 Mainstreet High Capacity Bandwidth Manager, and 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation(tm) products throughout the western Missouri and eastern Kansas areas conveyed by KCP&L.
"Our selection of Newbridge products was based partially on the need for complete control of the services we will be providing over this microwave and fiber network," said Carl Greenway, KCP&L director of telecommunications. "We were looking for one management station to cover as many of the network elements as possible and the Newbridge(R) 4602 MainStreet network management system offered the solution. The 4602 MainStreet product manages the DACS, the intelligent multiplexer, non-Newbridge equipment and potentially even the LAN products we use."
Michael Pascoe, president of Newbridge U.S. commented, "This contract proves that our adherence to standards-based architecture will maintain our lead in providing solutions for private and public networks. I am proud of the role our products will play in the expanded KCP&L digital network."
The 3645 MainStreet High Capacity Bandwidth Manager products in the KCP&L network will each function as a 3/1/0 DACS at three major switching locations on the ring network. Each will have a minimum of three redundant DS3 cards interfaced to fiber optic or microwave radio transmission equipment. By using the 3645 MainStreet product for combined DACS and Drop & Insert functions full utilization of the DS3 network can be accomplished with fewer discrete devices. It can also be fully controlled by the 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation at the subrate circuit level.
The 3600 MainStreet Bandwidth Manager products used in the network will offer 1/0 Drop & Insert capabilities at most of the sites on the network ring. The interfaces used at the sites include T1, V.35, RS232 and various 2 wire and 4 wire analog terminations. Voice conference bridging and multi-point bridged PCM circuits will be implemented by using system wide resources available in the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) cards in any of the nodes.
The KCP&L network will be managed by three 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation products allowing features such as network partitioning and master/redundant operations to be used. Control of circuits throughout the network will be provided by the 4602 MainStreet network management system and alternate re-routing for failed routes will take place automatically without interruption of service to users.
Full integration of all network sites in the KCP&L system is expected to be completed by the end of 1993.
