NEWBRIDGE AND XYPLEX FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

 KANATA, Ontario, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Newbridge Networks Corporation, a world leader in ATM networking and advanced wide area network products, and Xyplex, Inc. (Xyplex(TM)), the premier routing hub supplier, announced today that they are forming a strategic development and marketing alliance to incorporate the Newbridge(R) VIVID(TM) Ridge and ATM switching technology into the Xyplex Network 9000(TM) Routing Hub. The resulting product will be supported by Newbridge and Xyplex as an integrated product family.
 "Our customers want the performance benefits of ATM products along with the associated cost effectiveness now," commented Greg Ferguson, Vice President, Sales and Marketing at Xyplex. "Our alliance with Newbridge combines their advanced ATM LAN technology with our Network 9000 Routing Hub, one of the industry's most versatile hubs, greatly advancing the realization of efficient ATM LAN solutions. Organizations can start with an unmanaged shared-media LAN and gradually migrate to more powerful SNMP management and ATM performance in an `Evergreen' platform, the Network 9000 Hub," added Mr. Ferguson.
 "We are excited about delivering Newbridge ATM products in existing LAN environments," remarked John Carosella, Director of Business Development at VIVID, the Newbridge ATM LAN division. "The Network 9000 Hub is an ideal platform from which to offer the benefits of the VIVID next-generation LAN architecture."
 The VIVID Ridge provides an elegant migration path from traditional LAN technologies to ATM-based networking infrastructures. The Ridge provides full-wire speed switching among multiple LAN ports, and provides the appropriate links to allow LAN users to communicate over an ATM network to ATM-attached devices or other LAN-attached devices.
 Unlike a great many potential ATM platforms, the Xyplex Network 9000 Hub was designed from the beginning to support ATM. This means that customers may initially connect existing Ethernet, Token Ring, and FDDI LANs into a campus ATM backbone and then migrate to ATM directly to the desktop. The Network 9000 Hub will serve as both a feeder node for ATM backbones as well as a local ATM switch, combining multiple buildings or direct ATM desktop feeds in one platform.
 "Current Network 9000 Hub Customers will be pleased to know that their existing Network 9000 Hubs will accommodate these ATM upgrades," added Greg Ferguson.
 "Our commitment to provide a new LAN architecture with a broad base of support from existing hub vendors is evident from the formation of this alliance," commented Newbridge Chairman Terry Matthews. "The architectural approach we have taken with VIVID products is a logical way to integrate traditional LAN infrastructures with ATM products. That is why we are incorporating the technology into existing wiring hubs."
 Several ATM products, scheduled for availability by the second quarter of 1994, offer the following functions:
 -- ATM-based LAN segment switching, which makes use of the Newbridge high-performance ATM switching fabric and LAN adaptation technology;
 -- ATM switching and connectivity, which combines the ATM switching, transmission, and LAN adaptation capabilities from Newbridge with the interface and port switching capabilities of the Network 9000 Hub.
 The Ridge will be incorporated into the Network 9000 platform in mid 1994, offering the next stage of integration between the Xyplex Network 9000 Hub and the VIVID next-generation Lan architecture.
