NEWBRIDGE AND SMC TEAM TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS FOR INTERNETWORKING MARKET

KANATA, Ontario, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Newbridge Networks VIVID(tm) business unit and Standard Microsystems Corporation (SMC) today announced that they have formed a strategic alliance to jointly develop and market a series of standards-based internetworking products based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology. The new products will be aimed specifically at the ATM adapter and workgroup switch markets, culminating in the development of a second-generation switch for workgroup ATM LAN applications to be marketed by both companies. In addition to the switch, both organizations will OEM those products or technologies deemed complementary and/or appropriate to round out a complete suite of internetworking products.
"We believe that the combination of SMC's strength in shared media and our strength in ATM technology provides a synergistic approach not otherwise available in today's market," said Brian NeSmith, Vice President in charge of the Newbridge VIVID business unit.
Newbridge will bring to the alliance functional ATM designs including connection management services, signaling, and LAN emulation. SMC will contribute ASIC design efforts, bus interface chips and software drivers for various network operating system environments, and PC-based adapters for EISA, PCI and ISA platforms.
"The joint development will allow us to offer the industry's broadest and most cost effective portfolio of ATM LAN products," added Mike Pascoe, President of Newbridge U.S.
"The alliance between Newbridge and SMC is a good example of industry leaders collaborating to bring products and technologies to market in a timely manner," stated Lance Murrach, SMC Vice President, Marketing.
