NEW YORK TELEPHONE CRACKS DOWN ON RAMPANT TELEPHONE FRAUD
NEW YORK, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- New York Telephone is blocking international calls from selected public phones at Times Square and other locations in midtown Manhattan to help long distance carriers crack down on rampant telephone fraud.
The company announced today that it has initiated the ban at most of its public phones inside the Port Authority Bus Terminal and at surrounding sidewalk locations. The company said it would also target other high-fraud areas throughout New York City.
New technology developed by Mars Electronics International, based in Pennsylvania, blocks international calls attempted through any long distance carrier or private business phone system. New York Telephone said it would implement the program at selected public phones so as not to inconvenience legitimate callers.
The company's plan is designed to combat a growing network of thieves who steal calling card numbers and monopolize public phones by selling discounted calls to foreign countries. Fraudulent callers also may access a long distance carrier by illegally tapping into a business phone system, enabling them to call anywhere in the world at the expense of an unwitting customer.
Telephone fraud is estimated at more than $1 billion a year nationwide. New York Telephone operates more than 57,000 public phones in New York City.
