NEW YORK POWER AUTHORITY BEGINS EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXERCISE
AT INDIAN POINT 3 NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
The New York Power Authority has begun a full-scale emergency response exercise at its Indian Point 3 Nuclear Power Plant.
The Indian Point Joint News Center (JNC) at the Westchester County Airport has been activated as a part of the exercise to provide a single, central facility for release of all information on the simulated events.
The counties of Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam, and New York State, are participating in the exercise and are represented at the JNC with the Power Authority.
Reporters are encouraged to attend and participate in briefings at the JNC, which is located in the former Air National Guard Building No. 1 at the Westchester County Airport. The airport is at Exit 2 of Interstate 684, north of White Plains.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is evaluating the response of the state and county organizations to a simulated emergency at the Indian Point 3 plant. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is evaluating the Power Authority staff's response at the plant, JNC and other emergency facilities.
All nuclear power plants are required to conduct annual emergency response exercises.
