NEW YORK FRIARS CLUB ESTABLISHES 'GEORGE AWARD' The New York Friars Club first annual "George Award" for outstanding
comedian will be unveiled there Jan. 16 by Alan King, Freddie Roman and Henny Youngman; a bronze head will awarded to (guess who?) George Burns at the Las Vegas Riviera on his 96th birthday Jan. 24.
WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 16, at 3 p.m. WHERE: New York Friars Club, 57 E. 55th St. WHAT: A bronze head (two-thirds lifesize) of George Burns, from now on named the "George Award," to be given annually to an outstanding comedian, will be unveiled. HOW: Actor-comic Alan King (who's been filming Robert DeNiro's "Night and the City" here); comedian Freddie Roman (currently starring in "Catskills on Broadway") and Henny Youngman, the young comic (compared to Burns, anyway), will lift the veil from the bronze, which was magnificently sculpted by Stan Sawyer. WHY: Named for Burns, the award will, ironically, be bestowed for the first time on (surprise) Burns, himself, at ceremonies on his 96th birthday, Jan. 24, while performing onstage with Pia Zadora at the Las Vegas Riviera Hotel. BACKGROUND: The New York Friars Club has established the "George Award," a tribute to be presented annually to an outstanding comedian. First to be honored (as if you didn't know) will be George Burns, at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Jan. 24, saving him a trip to New York since he will be celebrating his 96th birthday there while performing on stage with Pia Zadora. It's ironic, because the New York Friars Club, the legendary theatrical, fraternal and philanthropic organization of 86 years, greatly inspired by Burns' decades of performing, named the award after him. Jackie Green, dean of the New York Friars Club, said, "In a republic where comedy is king, where comedians make up a large part of television, movie and live performances, the U.S. has never paid tribute where it is due -- organized any kind of official Comedians' Day, a salute to these national treasures, lifters of spirits, pundits philosophers and clowns. "Everything else gets honored, proclaimed, declared and decreed across the nation. There's even a Prune Breakfast Month, believe it or not, and if a prune can get respect, why not the comedian?" Burns' Birthday Bash at the Riviera will be attended by his celebrity friends and, considering his number of performing years, there'll be many.
