NEW UNITED MOTOR TO ADD 4X4 TOYOTA COMPACT PICKUP TRUCKS
FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- At a special dedication ceremony today, Toyota announced it will add 4x4 compact pickup truck production at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) in February 1992.
NUMMI, a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, began producing the first U.S.--built 4x2 Toyota compact pickup trucks in August.
"For more than 10 years, Toyota has been the leader in the 4x4 compact pickup truck market," said Bob McCurry, Toyota Motor Sales executive vice president. "Adding the 4x4 compact pickup to NUMMI will enable us to continue our leadership in this arena. In 1987, Toyota accounted for 30 percent of the 4x4 market and last year we captured 34 percent. This year, we expect Toyota 4x4 compact pickup truck sales to make-up approximately 35 percent of the market."
The new production line is the result of a $350-million plant expansion announced in April 1989. The expansion covers 1.7 million square feet and includes a new paint facility dedicated to the truck line.
At full capacity, NUMMI will build approximately 100,000 Toyota compact pickup trucks annually. NUMMI currently builds 200,000 Chevrolet Geo Prizms and Toyota Corolla sedans a year.
Some 700 new team members will be added by the time the truck line reaches full production next summer. To date, approximately 500 team members have been hired, bringing current employment at NUMMI to 3,500.
