REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Edmark Corp. (NASDAQ: EDMK) today announced the shipment of "Thinkin' Things," the first in a new generation of educational software programs designed to build kids' thinking skills. The program helps children ages four to eight expand memory, creativity, problem solving skills and critical thinking abilities. Available for both the MS-DOS(R) and Macintosh(R) platforms, "Thinkin' Things" is the newest addition to the Edmark line of award- winning interactive educational software programs for young children that also includes "Millie's Math House, Bailey's Book House" and "KidDesk".
"In today's environment of rapid change, it is critical that our children learn how to learn," said Sally Narodick, Edmark chair and chief executive officer. "They need more than the 'three R's'; they need a set of skills that allows them to be flexible and inventive when developing solutions. 'Thinkin' Things' empowers young children to become successful thinkers by encouraging their spirit of inquiry and rewarding creativity and persistence."
In "Thinkin' Things", kids can select from six challenging activities. Four of the activities feature colorful, animated characters like the rhythmic Oranga Banga and musical Tooney Loon, both of which use sounds and patterns to help strengthen memory and auditory recognition. In the Fripple Shop, kids can develop the basics of logic by finding the friendly Fripple that fits the customer's specification. Identification of relationships and attributes is the key to completing the series of birds in the Feathered Friends factory. The two remaining activities, BLOX Flying Spheres and BLOX Flying Shapes, bring children into a "three-dimensional" world where they can explore spacial relationships, experiment with physical principles, build fine motor skills and create little masterpieces with motion, sound, color and shapes.
Program Can Be Adjusted to Fit Individual Needs
Since all instructions are verbal or graphical, no reading skills are required to use "Thinkin' Things". In addition, several of the programs have two modes of operation: The Question and Answer mode (where kids answer a character's question), and Create mode (kids explore, experiment and create independently). This allows children to learn in the manner most comfortable for them and encourages self- confidence when exploring new ways to learn.
"Thinking Things" also includes a Grow Slide that allows parents to adjust activities so children start at the level appropriate to their age and ability and "grow" with the program. In addition, the manual provides suggestions for "together time" so parents can participate in the "Thinkin' Things" learning experience with the child and reinforce these skills away from the computer.
A Free Software Guide for Parents
To assist parents in selecting children's educational software, Edmark's team of educators has developed the "Parent's Guide to Educational Software."
