NEW SUBSTANCE ABUSE ASSESSMENT HOLDS DOWN COSTS, ENHANCES CARE, BENEFITS PATIENTS, EMPLOYERS, HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

NEW YORK, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Call it STEP for Short Term Evaluation Program, the latest procedure introduced by the Cornerstone Facilities of New York and Connecticut to fully assess and refer substance abuse patients within two days or less.
Available at Cornerstone Facilities in Manhattan, in Garden City, N.Y., and Newtown, Conn., STEP has advantages for the patient, who can now more quickly get a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment, and health care providers, who can confidently depend upon referrals to an appropriate practitioner or facility.
"We know it's not easy to take off from work or school," says Gilbert Calcano, senior vice president of Cornerstone's Substance Abuse Services. "The assessment can be done over a weekend or during a day or two off."
"When clinically appropriate, treatment referrals will be provided to outpatient settings to accommodate the demands of today's world," he says.
STEP contains costs, according to Cornerstone President Norman J. Sokolow, "because recommendations are made for only the length of stay and only the level of care required by the particular case."
Senior vice president and clinical director for Cornerstone of Eagle Hill, Robert W. Deutsch, Ph.D., C.A.S. says treatment options are quickly facilitated, "because the medical, substance abuse, psychosocial and family and work-related assessment is so comprehensive, that the patient is effectively assisted toward the most appropriate treatment provider for his or her own needs."
Insurance companies, managed care networks, preferred provider networks, HMOs and treatment providers are enthusiastic about STEP's cost containment features, Calcano says.
"STEP relieves corporate human resource offices and unions of the confrontational role involved in suggesting that an employee has a drug or alcohol problem," Calcano says. "Without labeling the individual, they can help employees take the first step toward regaining control over their lives."
