NEW STERILIZATION MONITORING PROGRAM FOR DENTISTS

NEW STERILIZATION MONITORING PROGRAM FOR DENTISTS
SUMMARY: Former University of Washington professors launch

company to educate dentists and the general public on HIV/Hepatitis risk reduction. Company announces new STERILCHEK(TM) sterilization monitoring program for dentists.
BELLEVUE, Wash., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. James Clagett and Dr. Bernard Moncla, former professors of microbiology and oral biology at the University of Washington, have recently launched Dental Diagnostic Services to promote safer dental practices throughout the Pacific Northwest, the company said today. The company will hold seminars to provide technically oriented and practical information on infection control through proper instrument sterilization to dentists and the general public. It will also offer dentists a quick, effective and inexpensive sterilization monitoring (asepsis) program aimed at reducing the risks of the transference of bloodborne diseases from dentist to patient.
"Recent publicity surrounding the treatment of HIV-infected patients as well as the possible transmission of HIV from a dentist with AIDS to patients," commented Clagett, "have caused many concerned dentists to reassess their sterilization procedures. We want to ensure that most, if not all, dental practitioners get the facts regarding proper sterilization and have the opportunity to modify their practice accordingly."
The company recently established an advanced asepsis monitoring program that is now available to dentists nationwide. Called STERILCHEK(TM), the program offers dentists a fast and low cost asepsis program monitored by highly trained and specialized PhDs.
"In general, the dental profession is very diligent regarding patient comfort and safety," Clagett added, "and we think that dentists across the country will jump to get a place in line to our seminars, once they become aware of their depth and value. We also anticipate that many dentists will use our advanced STERILCHEK program as a way to demonstrate their level of awareness of the need for proper sterilization and commitment to patient comfort and safety."
"A recent study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that in 1989-90, 20 percent of dental sterilization efforts failed ("Instrument Sterilization Procedures" The Journal of the American Dental Association, Vol. 122, October 1991, pp. 51-56). As bloodborne diseases become more common, we anticipate that most, if not all, dentists will voluntarily comply with the American Dental Association, the Centers for Disease Control and/or OSHA guidelines for instrument sterilization. The response from dentists who attended our recent pilot seminar was overwhelmingly positive."
Moncla was a faculty member of the University of Washington Departments of Periodontics and Oral Biology from 1984 to 1991. Clagett was a tenured professor of Microbiology-Immunology and Periodontics at the University of Washington Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, respectively. Both have been widely published in academic journals and have consulted or managed public health-related efforts for major corporations.
The STERILCHEK program and asepsis seminars are approved by the American Dental Association and The Centers For Disease Control. The next seminar will be held Jan. 18 at the Red Lion Hotel in Bellevue from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
