 NEW SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON ROBOT
ELIMINATES HUMAN EXPOSURE TO DANGEROUS PCBS
ROSEMEAD, Calif., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- To maximize worker safety, Southern California Edison has developed and is now using a unique industrial robot that prepares oil samples for gas chromatography analysis. That system detects the presence of any potentially hazardous polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in transformers and circuit breakers.
The robot -- the first of its kind -- employs a micro laser barcode reader, which enables the system to identify the bottle containing the oil sample. This initiates the actual documentation of the test, with the results then made available for regulatory agencies.
Installation of the robot is part of Edison's response to mandates issued by the Environmental Protection Agency requiring utilities to intensively monitor high-voltage electrical equipment that at one time contained PCBs for insulation.
"In addition to increasing productivity, the robot enhances safety by minimizing human contact with PCBs, solvents and other acids," said Assistant Test Engineer Jeff Counseller. "We also expect improved accuracy, automatic generation and storage of a complete audit trail, and increased lab capacity."
During operation, the five-foot-by-five-foot robot automates the detection process by preparing samples of insulating oil. It rotates around a table, preparing chemicals, test tubes, caps and other equipment for the PCB-analysis process.
