NEW SERVICE CALLS DAILY TO CHECK ON WELL-BEING OF OLDER PEOPLE
OR THOSE WHO ARE ILL OR DISABLED
MORRISTOWN, N.J., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Late at night, an elderly woman living alone falls and breaks her hip. She bangs on the floor with her hand until a neighbor finally hears and brings help.
It was Karen Kelly's 93-year-old grandmother who fell. The incident inspired Kelly to establish a new service which calls elderly or disabled people everyday to confirm they are okay.
Appropriately named, How Are You Today, Inc. is a computerized service that calls at the same time daily. If the person at home fails to answer after 10 rings or indicates they need help by pressing zero on a touchtone phone, the service immediately calls three friends, relatives and neighbors to ask them to help.
"This, in particular, has been of value to working people such as the two-career couple who are concerned about the well-being of a parent or grandparent home alone," says Kelly, president of How Are You Today, Inc.
The service is available nationally, so that anyone with a parent, for example, in Florida can now be assured of their well-being daily.
"Our service takes the reliability and consistency of computerized dialing and enhances it with personal service," said Kelly. "The message for each person is personally recorded by me, and each person is addressed by name. We meet with local subscribers and the monitored person to discuss how we work and the best times to call, which can also serve as a reminder to take medication. We send birthday cards to senior citizens on the service, and call them personally from time to time to see how they are.
"This service is for independent, active people who like living alone but could be at risk. For example, one 80-year-old monitored person gives herself insulin shots, and another has high blood pressure. Our business mission is to provide peace of mind to the monitored person and concerned family and friends by providing this service as a communication tool to let everyone know that the person is doing well every day."
 What It Costs
The service costs $1 a day within New Jersey ($30 a month). The subscriber fee for out-of-state calls is $1.50 a day ($45 a month). For more information and a brochure, call How Are You Today, Inc. at 1-800-775-OKAY, or write to P.O. Box 189, Morristown, N.J. 07663-0189.
