NEW RANGE ROVER WINS SPORT-UTILITY HONORS; TOP AUTO WRITERS PICK FLAGSHIP MODEL AS BEST IN CLASS

LANHAM, Md., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A panel of six leading automotive experts has named the 1993 Range Rover County LWB (long wheelbase) the Best Sport-Utility Vehicle in North America. The honor was part of an annual review conducted by Playboy magazine of the best new vehicles. The Range Rover County LWB was chosen over the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

"The Range Rover County LWB is arguably the world's best sport- utility," wrote Ken Gross, Playboy's contributing automotive editor. "Its extended midsection, upgraded two-hundred horsepower V8, electronic air suspension and traction control put it in a class by itself."
Other members of the expert panel included top Indy Car racing driver Bobby Rahal; Brock Yates, columnist for Car and Driver magazine; Jim Healey, auto writer for USA Today; John Davis, the host of the PBS series "Motorweek;" and David Stevens, a senior editor for Playboy.
The County LWB debuted in October 1992, with the world's first four- wheel-drive application of an exclusive electronic air suspension (EAS) system that can be adjusted over a range of 5.1 inches to suit varying road and speed conditions. It also allows the vehicle to be lowered for easier entry and exit. EAS has been hailed by automotive experts as a significant advance in sport-utility vehicle technology.
"This award means a lot to us since it comes from journalists and a racing champion who have driven all the new products and really know the auto industry," said Charles R. Hughes, president, Land Rover North America, Inc. "But the proof of the County LWB's merits can be seen in the marketplace, where consumers have cast their ballots in record numbers by purchasing the new Range Rovers."
Land Rover sales during the last quarter of 1992 were the best in company history. Up more than 48 percent over the same period a year ago, sales for December 1992 set a new one-month record for the company.
Since their introduction in 1987, more than 23,000 Range Rovers have been sold.
Land Rover Defender 110 and Range Rover models are manufactured by Land Rover, a member of the Rover Group of companies, in Solihull, England.
