NEW PLEA IN HUNT FOR BELINDA KILLER; Prostitute led double life.

Byline: By NICOLA TALLANT

THE sadistic killer of a pretty beautician leading a double life as a callgirl is still on the loose, gardai revealed yesterday.

Belinda Pereira, pictured, was battered to death nine years ago but no one has ever been charged with the crime.

Gardai hoping to find the killer have launched a major review of the case.

They said the 26-year-old was beaten to death in an apartment in Dublin city centre sometime after 11pm on December 28, 1996.

Belinda was studying to become a beautician but had been working for a year as a high-class prostitute.

Detective Inspector Christy Mangan said Belinda was killed with a blunt object that has never been found.

He said: "Through our investigations we believe she was killed after 11pm on the night of the 28th or the early hours of the following morning."

He added whoever killed her may have confided in someone about the murder and would have been covered in blood following the assault.

Officers have been told Belinda was completely defenceless during the attack and had no marks on her body to show she had time to even try to protect herself.

Superintendent Ray Barry, who ordered the review, said: "Belinda suffered an awful death and it is our job to find who did that to her."

The young prostitute would direct clients to her Liffey St apartment where they would pay her an e150 hourly fee.

Officers have identified and interviewed most of Belinda's clients through phone records. All have provided alibis for the time of her death.

However, gardai said Belinda had one final caller on the night of December 28.

Superintendent Barry added: "We do not know if the murder weapon was something that would have been in the apartment or if this person brought it with them to visit Belinda.

"However, whether it was a hammer or a bat it would have been covered in blood."
