NEW PLAIN PAPER COLOR BUBBLE JET PRINTER FROM CANON COMPUTER SYSTEMS BREAKS PRICE/PERFORMANCE BARRIER

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Canon Computer Systems Inc. (CCSI) today introduced the most affordable, high-quality color Bubble Jet printer currently available, the BJC-600. At only 15 cents per page, the new printer has the lowest per page cost of any color printer in its class. Designed for small office and home office consumers, the 9.9-pound desktop printer produces brilliant color on plain paper at a resolution of 360 dots-per-inch. For example, consumers can incorporate color charts and graphics to enhance business proposals or make clip art come alive with full-color drawings. The street price for the BJC-600 is expected to be under $649.
"Color is hot," said Carolyn Perrier, director of Peripheral Marketing at Canon Computer Systems Inc. "Consumers want to enhance their documents with high quality color easily, quickly, and most importantly, economically. The BJC-600 is the first color printer product to deliver all the features consumers demand."
For the past several months market researchers have reported that color ink jet sales are expected to increase dramatically over the next few years. BIS Strategic Decisions, Norwell, Mass., for example, projects a 10-fold increase in color ink jet printer unit sales between 1992 and 1995 for a total of 2.4-million units.
"The quality of the BJC-600 is a hands down winner for users who have become interested to print in color," said Marco Boer, printer analyst, International Data Corp., Framingham, Mass. "In this price range, the color output quality is unmatched by any other printers in its class. The colors are clear and vibrant without evidence of banding, nor bleeding of colors."
 Key Product Features
Nominated as one of the finalists for the 1993 most valuable color printer category by PC/Computing magazine (winner to be announced in November), the BJC-600 has made several significant advances in three key areas: high print quality on plain paper, speed and cost per page.
-- High Print Quality on Plain Paper -- Canon's new ink formula dries 100 times faster than conventional inks which is ideal for printing on plain and bond paper. Users can now output millions of colors without the bleeding that is typical of printers in this price range.
-- Speed -- With its four print-head system, the BJC-600's throughput is faster than other ink jet products in its class due to the number of nozzles (64) dedicated to each color (cyan, magenta, yellow and true black).
-- Cost Per Page -- The BJC-600 utilizes a "no waste printing system" using four separate ink cartridges to hold the primary output colors of cyan, magenta, yellow and true black. Each color can be changed separately which will eliminate throwing away unused ink or ribbon as required with other all-in-one color cartridge printers. And at 15 cents per page, the BJC-600 is 19 cents less than the comparable Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 550C.
Brilliant Color Utilizing a Four Color Print Head
The BJC-600 utilizes a 256-nozzle print head with 64 nozzles designated for each of the four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and true black. The small, transparent ink cartridges hold 700 pages in draft mode, 350 pages of ink for quality-mode text printing, and 210 pages in graphics (at 30-percent coverage). The BJC-600 can also print on recycled paper, labels, Bubble Jet transparencies, and soon to be available, back print film.
High Quality Printing in a Small Footprint
The compact footprint of the BJC-600 measures 16.1 inches (W) by 9.7 inches (H) by 18.4 inches (D). It includes a standard paper tray with a straight paper path that holds up to 100 sheets of paper or 10 envelopes. With a new bidirectional, multipass feature, banding or white lines are eliminated to create smooth, even solids and gradations. Other low cost color printers suggest using special coated paper to achieve acceptable results which can be very costly over the life of the product.
The printer ships with Microsoft Windows 3.0 and 3.1 drivers and 20 scalable TrueType fonts. For users requiring PostScript capabilities, the BJC-600 is compatible with a variety of software programs from third-party vendors such as Zenographics' ZScript that interprets PostScript output for any platform. Many other software programs that can benefit from the color capabilities of the BJC-600 include presentation software, word processing, spreadsheets, CAD/CAM, paint and photo design and graphics software from companies such as Harvard Graphics (Software Publishing Corp.), Fractal Design and WordPerfect. With a new line of labels from Avery specially designed for ink jet printers, users now can add color to their addressing and shipping labels. Printer sharing and networking capabilities are available from connectivity vendors such as Extended Systems, ASP Computer Products and Castelle.
Consumers wanting to add color to their documents will benefit from a software-based online guide that assists and educates users how to use color easily. The guide answers basic questions about color, its use and the driver provides an "on screen" hint box to assist users with setting changes and questions.
As with all Canon's Bubble Jet printers, the BJC-600 meets the Energy Star printer requirements for energy savings standards. It consumes, on average, 10-15 watts during operation and in stand-by mode, 5 watts.
 Pricing, Warranty and Availability
The BJC-600 is available at computer dealers, superstores and mass retailers in the United States at a suggested manufacturer's retail price (MSRP) of $719. The ink cartridges have an MSRP of $7.50 (black) and $8 for each color (cyan, magenta or yellow). The product has a two- year warranty and customers have access to a toll free, 11-hour (6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Pacific Standard Time) Monday-Friday technical service support line.
