NEW PC SOFTWARE, VIDEO GAME SYSTEMS & CARTRIDGES TOP GIFT ITEMS AT SOFTWARE ETC. THIS SEASON

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 25 ~PRNewswire~ -- Wondering what to get for the video game or PC aficionado on your gift list this season? Software Etc. recommends hot new video game and software releases, 16-bit Sega Genesis and Super NES systems, and PC software and PC CD-ROM drives.
Here's what's hot for the holidays at Software Etc., the nation's leading specialty retailer of home PC and video game software:
Video games. "We have an abundance of titles for the 16-bit Sega Genesis and Super NES systems," says Cathy Preston, divisional merchandise manager (DMM) for Software Etc. She predicts that Sonic 2 The Hedgehog from Sega Genesis will be her all-time best-selling cartridge title -- even bigger than Streetfighter II. New, lower prices on hardware are helping fuel sales in the 16-bit category: $89 for a system with a cartridge purchase is "a great value," Preston says.
The new Sega CD Player will be featured with in-store demos at many Software Etc. locations. Going into the holiday season, Software Etc. had more than 6,000 advance reservations for this product, which Preston says represents "unprecedented interest."
Consumer interest in Nintendo's Super NES 16-bit video game system also will be strong, predicts Preston, thanks to Nintendo's growing game library (125-plus titles for holiday 1992 versus just 17 last year); and a package which includes the Super NES, two controllers and the game SUPER MARIO WORLD at $139.99.
Here are Preston's picks for the season's top selling cartridges:
-- Sega: Sonic 2 The Hedgehog; John Madden Football '93; Terminator II, The Arcade Game; NHLPA Hockey '93; and Dolphin.
-- Super NES: Streetfighter II, Bulls vs. Blazers, Humans, Out of this World, Death Valley Rally and Desert Strike.
-- PC upgrades. Software Etc.'s basic CD-ROM drive kit includes powered speakers, stereo and audio, as well as full-motion video for the PC. Other products sure to please PC users include internal hard drives; memory upgrades; co-processors, which increase the speed of number processing functions of the PC; tape back-ups that come with a free formatted cartridge; and 3-1~2-inch floppy drive kits.
Entertainment and education software. Software Etc. DMM Chuck Whitaker's picks for top-selling entertainment software titles include Batman Returns, Battle Chess 4,000, Car & Driver, Maximum Overkill, Front Page Sports Football, F15 Strike Eagle III, Strike Commander and NFL Video Pro. His picks in educational software include: Treasure Cove, Treasure MathStorm, Timewriters in American History and Reader Rabbit II, Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego? Deluxe Edition, Kid Pix Companion, Kid Cuts, Zugware, Zookeeper and Reading Adventures in Oz. Software Etc. stores carry 96 CD-ROM software titles, and offer special discounts on CD-ROM software with the purchase of a CD-ROM drive.
Productivity software. A combination of new releases of top-selling standards and lower-priced gift items will top shopper's lists, says DMM Gary Sousa. His picks for top sellers include: Quicken 6.0 and Quicken Windows 2.0; Turbo Tax; Print Shop Deluxe and Print Shop Deluxe for Windows; DOS 5.0 upgrade; Windows 3.1; Stacker 3.0; Quattro Pro for Windows; and Microsoft's new Windows database, Access. Sousa's list of top gift items include: the new version of the Far Side Calendar; a Star Trek version of After Dark; Flintstone fonts that "make a document look like it's right out of Bedrock;" and a Christmas for Windows package that "lets computer users decorate their computer screens and play music for the holidays," Sousa says.
