NEW PASSENGER BOAT TO SAIL OLD 'TASHMOO' ROUTE

DETROIT, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Those who dream of sailing the route of the old steamers that once ferried summer tourists to area beaches and resorts and those who seek a unique nautical adventure can lean on the rail of the new "Diamond Belle" and watch the shoreline glide by.
On May 30, the Maritime Historical Society of Detroit, the Great Lakes Maritime Institute and the Lake Huron Maritime Society will co-sponsor a cruise that will sail from Hart Plaza and follow the route of the famous White Star Line passenger vessel, the "Tashmoo." Passengers will ride on the riverboat "Diamond Belle," Diamond Jack's River Tours' newest vessel. The trip will take guests across Lake St. Clair, up into the St. Clair River to its end, with a turnaround in Lake Huron. Freighter buffs will likely have the opportunity to see, from a new perspective, the quiet giants that ply our waters.
Downbound, the "Diamond Belle" will sail into what was once known as the "Venice of America," the St. Clair Flats Canal, passing by Avalon Beach and Cherry Beach. Passengers can conjure up the excitement and music of the old carousel and dance hall at Sans Souci, as the "Belle" glides near the shore. These old wooden buildings, still standing, are now used for boat storage. "Many area people remember the heyday of the steamers," explained Capt. Bill Hoey, founder and owner of Diamond Jack's River Tours. "The 'Tashmoo' was a well-known ship around these parts. We thought this would be an interesting trip. Walpole Island and Harsens Island are a big part of the history of the area, and we will be passing by and talking about the islands too."
Hoey operates the "Diamond Jack," which is in its third season of presenting narrated two-hour Detroit River tours. Passengers on the May 30 run have the option of a box lunch on board and continuing the sail up river to Lake Huron or disembarking at the St. Clair Inn for lunch and then reboarding for the downbound trip.
Tickets are available to the public at $45 per person, lunch included at the St. Clair Inn. Reservations must be received by May 17. For further information and reservations, call Diamond Jack's River Tours at 313-843-9376.
