NEW NEONS BRIGHTENING ROCKY MOUNTAIN HORIZON AT THRIFTY IN DENVER

DENVER, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dodge and Plymouth Neon, Chrysler's newest and highly acclaimed entry into the U.S. small car market, is available to Thrifty Car Rental customers at Stapleton International Airport, brightening Colorado's highways and byways as part of an early customer feedback program.
Scott Crawford, Thrifty city manager in Denver, said 50 of the new subcompact cars have been delivered to the Mile High City, marking the car's street debut to the U.S. driving public.
Sold under the Plymouth and Dodge badges, the first Neons are being shipped to dealers this month.
Thrifty is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chrysler with more than 850 locations worldwide, including about 450 locations in the United States. Thrifty operates three locations in the Denver metropolitan area.
Heralded as a fun-to-drive, affordable driver's car for a new generation of car buyers, the Neon features an all new 2.0 liter, 16-valve engine and five-speed transmission, standard dual air bags as well as Chrysler's trend-setting cab forward architecture. Anti-lock brakes and integrated child safety seats are available as options.
Its development represents a $1.3 billion, 31-month investment by Chrysler to create a small car that consumers will want to buy instead of have to buy.
Also, Neon is the most environmentally-sensitive vehicle Chrysler has ever produced, using non-CFC refrigerants, water-based paints and many recyclable parts.
Crawford said the Neon will comfortably accommodate four people and has 11.8 cubic feet of trunk space. The fuel economy of the Neon with an automatic transmission is 27 miles per gallon for city driving; 33 mpg, highway.
All but five of the four-door Neons in the Denver Thrifty fleet feature an automatic transmission; the other five will be equipped with the standard five-speed transmission, Crawford said.
The car rents for $24-$27 a day, depending on demand, he added.
Neon renters will be asked to complete a customer satisfaction survey on the car's performance and will receive a certificate from Thrifty good for one free day rental.
The Thrifty customer questionnaire is part of Chrysler's continuing evaluation from potential Neon customers.
"We are delighted to offer our car rental customers the first opportunity to experience the new Neon," said Don Himelfarb, president of Thrifty Rent-A-Car Systems Inc., headquartered in Tulsa, Okla.
"Neon offers car renters, as well as buyers, fun-to-drive performance, safety, design, environmental sensitivity and overall value that will further establish Thrifty as an innovative and progressive car rental company," Himelfarb said.
