NEW MTBE UNIT INCREASES MOBIL'S HIGH-OCTANE CAPACITY IN GERMANY
FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB) said today that a refinery operated by its German affiliate, Mobil Oil AG, has become the first Mobil refinery outside the United States to manufacture the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether, generally referred to as MTBE. When added to gasoline, MTBE increases octane and facilitates the manufacturing of unleaded gasoline.
Mobil's MTBE unit went on stream at its Woerth Refinery in September and is now fully operational, with a capacity of 1,000 barrels of MTBE per day.
"Combined with the isomerization plant we streamed at Woerth two years ago, this will significantly increase Mobil Oil AG's capability for producing lead-free, high-octane gasoline," said Robert O. Swanson, executive vice president for Mobil's Marketing & Refining Division. "Other facilities recently installed at Woerth reduce the refinery's emissions, and will help Mobil meet stringent German environmental standards scheduled for the future."
Mobil's refinery at Woerth, a fully integrated fuels refinery with a capacity of 100,000 barrels per day, is in the Rhine Valley, near the scenic Black Forest region of southwestern Germany. Mobil Oil AG is a leading German petroleum company, accounting for about 20 percent of German natural gas production and over 12 percent of crude oil production. Most of its gasoline marketing is through Aral AG, in which it holds a 28 percent interest.
