NEW MISS UNIVERSE TO RECEIVE MCI VIDEOPHONES

WASHINGTON, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI announced today that, along with her new title, the 1993 Miss Universe will be receiving a pair of MCI VideoPhones -- the world's first international videophone.
The MCI VideoPhones, now available to customers in the United States, will give the new Miss Universe the ability to see in addition to hear conversations with her friends and family on a 3-inch color screen. The MCI VideoPhone is a lightweight, compact unit which plugs into a standard phone jack and functions as a normal telephone when the video display button is off. Calls cost the same over the MCI VideoPhone as over a regular telephone and VideoPhone customers receive the same low MCI rates on long distance calls.
The MCI VideoPhone, manufactured by Britain's GEC-Marconi, is internationally compatible with Marconi videophones being sold in the United Kingdom by British Telecom, in Germany by Deutsche Bundespost, in Hong Kong by Hong Kong Telecom, in Japan by Mitsui & Company, and in Singapore by Singapore Telecom. The MCI VideoPhone utilizes the Marconi M-VTS standard.
The MCI VideoPhone can be ordered by calling MCI toll-free, 800-759-PHONE. Customers who purchase an MCI VideoPhone will receive a 5 percent discount on the purchase of each additional phone. Customers may purchase MCI VideoPhones with a check, money order, or by using most major credit cards.
This is the 42nd annual Miss Universe Pageant and will feature more than 80 young women from around the world. The broadcast of the event will be seen in more than 60 countries.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, is the nation's second largest long-distance provider. MCI, the fastest growing carrier of international traffic among the top 20 largest international carriers, supports sales and services in 12 languages and offers clear, high- quality direct dial service to over 250 countries and places.
